About Stacking Sats
An Archived Open-Source Bitcoin Research Initiative
Stacking Sats was an open-source initiative for building, backtesting, and deploying optimal Bitcoin accumulation strategies for retail and institutional investors. The project is now archived; this site preserves its mission and history.

Why It Existed
Institutional Bitcoin Adoption and Accumulation
Spot Bitcoin ETFs ignited institutional accumulation. Stacking Sats was built to outperform naive dollar-cost averaging in that new market regime.
The world's most influential allocators — including BlackRock, Fidelity, Grayscale, ARK/21Shares, VanEck, Invesco, and WisdomTree — helped turn Bitcoin from a niche asset into an institutional product category. The inflection point was U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF approval on January 10, 2024, which unlocked familiar, regulated rails for large pools of capital.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs began trading January 11, 2024, and quickly ranked among the fastest-growing ETF segments in history. By roughly 1 year in, IBIT led with ~$38B of net inflows — and FBTC was the only other fund above $10B.
In 2025, institutional participation broadened further. Public disclosures showed sovereign wealth exposure (for example, Abu Dhabi's Mubadala reporting a large IBIT position), and flows into crypto ETFs continued at record-setting pace through the year.
This created an early-stage accumulation race with a simple game-theory dynamic: as more credible players acquired a scarce asset, the incentive for others to front-run the marginal buyer increased.
Dollar-cost averaging was widely used, but could be suboptimal in a reflexive, institutionalizing market. Stacking Sats implemented data-driven accumulation strategies that preserved DCA's core strengths — consistent, systematic purchases — while improving the efficiency of BTC acquired within a fixed budget and timeline.
